Couch Types and What Each One Takes to Remove

Sectional Sofas
A sectional is several couches clipped together, and it leaves the same way: one section at a time. The pieces usually unhook at the seams. If you separate them before the crew arrives, Thumbtack notes that it can cut labor time and lower the bill.
- HomeGuide: $200 to $375 for a three-piece sectional.
- HireAHelper: $300 to $375 for a couch or sectional.
- Corner wedges and chaise ends are the awkward pieces on stairs, so mention them when you describe the job.

Sleeper Sofas
A sleeper sofa looks like a normal couch until someone tries to lift it. The fold-out bed runs on a metal frame that adds a lot of weight and can slide open when the couch is tipped on end. Charity stores are a dead end here, since Goodwill refuses sleeper sofas outright (donation pickup covers what local charities accept). The thin mattress inside raises its own question: ask whether the hauler counts it as a second piece, because the county landfill charges per mattress (mattress removal has that fee).
Recliners and Reclining Sofas
A single recliner prices closer to a chair than a couch. Angi lists armchair removal at $50 to $100, and a lone recliner tends to fall in that range. A reclining sofa or loveseat counts as a couch. Power recliners have a motor, a wiring harness and a cord, so unplug them and tell the hauler it's a power model. On many recliners the back lifts straight off its brackets, which makes a tight hallway much easier.
Standard Sofas and Loveseats
A three-seat sofa or a loveseat is the simplest couch job. Thumbtack says a big sectional costs more to remove than a loveseat because it takes more room on the truck and more labor. It also says doing it yourself can work for a loveseat if you have a suitable vehicle, a helper and a clear path out. Without those, a single-item pickup is the usual route. The homepage has the single-item and truck-load prices if the couch is going with other things.

Couch Removal Price Drivers
Piece count
One sofa is one item. A sectional, or a couch plus a chair and ottoman, starts to be priced by how much of the truck it fills.Floor and stairs
A ground-floor couch out the front door is the cheap end. A second-floor bonus room with a turn on the landing is not.Condition
A clean, unbroken couch may be worth donating. A torn, stained or pet-damaged one goes straight to the landfill.Timing
Thumbtack lists same-day removal as something that can raise the price, so book a day or two ahead if you can.
Getting a Couch Ready for Pickup
STEP 01
Measure the way out
Measure the narrowest door and any stair turn, then give the hauler those numbers along with the couch's length. It tells them whether the couch goes out whole, comes apart or has to be cut down.
STEP 02
Strip it
Pull off loose cushions and throw pillows, check under the seat for keys, remotes and cash, and pull the mattress out of a sleeper if you can.
STEP 03
Clear the path
Move rugs, side tables and anything on the walls along the route. If the couch can go out the garage instead of the front door, say so.
See furniture removal for dressers, tables, bed frames and the rest of the room.
