Piano Types and How Each One Comes Out

Studio and Full Upright Pianos
The big vertical pianos cause most of the trouble. A studio upright stands 45 to 49 inches tall, and a full upright is over 49 inches. The tallest ones sit near the 900-pound top of HomeGuide's range for uprights. They're top-heavy and they don't bend, so the crew tips the piano onto a padded board, straps it down and walks it out. HireAHelper lists upright piano removal at $100 to $250.
Spinets and Consoles
Spinets stand under 40 inches and consoles 40 to 44 inches. HomeGuide says small spinets clear doorways more easily and take fewer people to lift than larger pianos. They still weigh several hundred pounds. That's a two-person job at minimum, not something to slide down the steps on a blanket.
Baby Grands and Grand Pianos
A baby grand runs 4 feet 11 inches to 5 feet 6 inches long, and a concert grand is over 7 feet. Grands weigh 500 to 1,300 pounds, and most won't fit through a door assembled. The legs, pedal lyre and lid come off, and the case goes out on its side on a board. Piano movers charge $80 to $100 for that partial disassembly, which gives you a sense of the extra labor in a removal quote.
Electric and Home Organs
Spinet organs have one row of keys, while console organs are bigger, with several rows. HomeGuide puts the cost of moving an organ at $150 to $350, depending on type. Organs are lighter than most pianos but bulky, and the bench and pedalboard usually go as separate pieces.

Why Clarksville homeowners call Clarksville Junk Haulers
- Your request goes to one local hauler, not a call list
- Ask for the all-in price before anything is loaded
- Free to call; you pay only the hauler, for the job you agree to
- Tell us about stairs, heavy items or a deadline up front
What Changes a Piano Removal Price
Type and weight
The step from a 300-pound spinet to a 1,300-pound grand changes how many people the hauler sends.Steps
Piano movers price stairs at $5 to $10 a step. Porch steps and a sunken living room count too.Heavy-item surcharge
HomeGuide lists a $50 to $100 piano surcharge among junk haulers' extra fees, so ask whether it's in the quote. The route out
A straight shot to the driveway is quick. A turn in a hallway, a narrow door or a soft lawn the dolly can't roll across all add time.
Before Paying to Haul a Piano Away
Charity stores are rarely the answer for a piano. Goodwill lists pianos among the items it can't accept (other local outlets are listed under donation pickup). If the piano still plays, a friend, church or school may want it. They'll still need someone to move it, and that bill is much the same as a removal. If nobody does, it goes out as junk. The quote should cover the bench, the hauling and the disposal.
See exercise equipment removal for other heavy, awkward pieces that need a crew and a dolly.
