PCS Move-Out Junk Removal at Each Stage of the Move
A PCS sets fixed dates for everything: the movers' survey, pack-out, the final inspection, the day you drive away. Junk removal fits best at one of the points below.

Before the Movers' Survey
This is the cheapest time to purge. The Naval Postgraduate School's personal property office estimates about 1,000 pounds per room, not counting bathrooms, so a full garage and a spare bedroom can push a family close to the limit. If you're over, every 100 pounds costs at least about $100. Getting rid of 500 pounds of junk you'd never unpack saves you around $500 in excess charges. A hauler is usually cheaper than that, and the stuff is gone before anyone writes an estimate.
What Counts Against Your Weight
Pro-gear is declared separately and doesn't count: up to 2,000 pounds for the service member and 500 for a spouse. Medical equipment and gun safes are left out of the allowance too. Furniture is never pro-gear, and spare car parts and utility trailers count in full. So the sagging sleeper sofa, the old weight bench and the box of brake rotors in the garage are good things to get rid of before the survey.

On-Post Housing Move-Out
Campbell Crossing, Fort Campbell's housing operator, has a three-step process: a 30-day notice to vacate, the move-out guide and charge sheet, then a final inspection. Its rules matter for junk. No bulk trash at the curb on move-out day, and no trash left inside or outside the home. Its charge sheet lists trash removal at $25 and up and lawn cleanup at $25 and up. Empty propane tanks go to a propane retailer, and electronics can't go in household trash. Book the junk pickup a few days before the inspection, not the morning of it.
Off-Post Rentals and Houses You've Sold
Off post, the deadline comes from a landlord's walk-through or a buyer's closing date instead. Ask your landlord what has to be gone, including sheds and the garage, and schedule the haul after the movers but before the cleaners. If the whole house has to be emptied, a house cleanout is the better fit.
